For the theatergoers of Montgomery County and vicinity, we bring, in English, this unforgettable love story "Datta" (THE BETROTHED) penned in 1918 by one of the iconic novelists/playwrights of those days in India. This English drama will allow the viewers to understand and absorb the story, while getting an inkling of the culture and art of Bengal -- in the form of professionally created music, period attires and mannerisms.
Bijoya, a rich heiress, was made to believe that she was betrothed to Bilas, the son of her father's childhood friend. But then she meets Naren, an FRCP physician, a penniless do-gooder, who harbors philanthropic ideas of coming up with medicines and vaccines for the benefit of the masses. Bijoya finds Naren's kind soul, hearty laughter, and boyish charms irresistible, and falls deeply in love with him, but feels trapped, as she is engaged to Bilas and cannot disobey her father's last wishes. In the end, will Bijoya be forced into an unhappy marriage with Bilas, or will she find a way to attain Naren, the man she truly loves? To see the outcome, you simply have to come to see this rather special drama, with an international cast.
Tickets are $20 for General Admission and $35 for VIP admission. All seats in both sections are first come first occupy.
Please buy tickets online, as no tickets will be available at the venue. If you have any problems or questions about buying your tickets online, please contact the Executive Director: Bharati Mitra at 301-996-0419 OR write to her at mitrbea@gmail.com
