The PCA 5K is an event that builds awareness about Pancreatic Cancer

Problem Statement/Purpose:
Pancreatic cancer affects our country at an alarmingly high rate, having the highest mortality rate of all major cancers. According to the American Cancer Society, pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, only following lung and colon cancers. In order to address this disease within our local community we will organize a “Pancreatic Cancer Awareness 5K” run to educate and increase awareness about this illness.

Plan of Action:
The Tau Gamma Gamma chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. will execute a series of races on Fort Liberty and Fayetteville; this particular race will bring raise awareness about pancreatic cancer. Giving us the opportunity to provide services to our community regarding an important health initiative:Additional objectives include
• Raising awareness to pancreatic cancer during November, which is pancreatic cancer awareness month
• Bring the communities of Fort Liberty and Fayetteville together in support of a health initiative event with a purpose (5K)
• Providing awareness of symptoms, risks, and prevention while identifying local resources to assist with early detection and treatment

Raising Value:
Organizing resources and executing this Pancreatic Cancer Awareness 5K directly aligns with our organizations mandated program, Health Initiatives. We have a great opportunity to highlight pancreatic cancer awareness during its observation month. Diabetes has a higher prevalence in the African American community and it predisposes them to the risks of pancreatic cancer. The overall goal is to make our local community more cognizant of this disease and means of prevention.
