The GNFAC along with the Friends of GNFAC and ASMSU are sponsoring this course.

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Pre-registration is REQUIRED and includes a Backcountry Access Slope Meter!

*This years course will look a little different due to COVID-19.

We're looking forward to having you join us for our Intro to Avalanche Course! This year's classroom portion will be online and LIVE, via Zoom, featuring our usual presenters!  The field session will be hosted at a lower instructor to student ratio, allowing distancing during instruction. Please bring a mask or face covering for use in the base area, chair lifts and times where we may be closer together.

The workshops will be held on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, with a field course on either Saturday or Sunday. Different topics will be presented each evening. Topics include: avalanche terrain recognition, the effect weather has on avalanche hazard, the development of the mountain snowpack, decision-making skills, and basic search and rescue procedures.

Participants in the field course should have basic skiing and snowboarding skills with the appropriate equipment to negotiate “groomed” intermediate ski runs. Please bring skins or snowshoes for uphill travel. Although not required, an avalanche rescue beacon, shovel, and probe will be very helpful for the field session. If you are signing up for the Snowmobile Field Session you must have your own sled and feel comfortable with basic backcountry riding.

You MUST attend both classroom sessions to go in the field on the weekend.

Classroom: Wed 1/20 & Thurs 1/21 7-9:30pm, Via Zoom. Details about logging into your meeting will be emailed to you. If you bought multiple tickets- have a viewing party or share with your other ticket holders.

Field Session: Students REGISTER for one field session Sat 1/23 or Sun 1/24 or 1/31 @ 9:15a-3:00p at Bridger Bowl, or our new Snowmobile specific field session Sunday 1/31 @ Buck Ridge from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. These are capped at 50 students per day this year. If we need to add additional field days to meet demand we will. Please bring a face covering to your field session.

Cost: $40.00 donation to the Friends of GNFAC (includes course and BCA Slope Meter)

Optional: $10 ($12 day of) for a copy of "Snow Sense: A Guide to Evaluating Avalanche Hazard"
